Parc Eglos School –  Curriculum

At Parc Eglos School, we are committed to nurturing curious, confident, and capable learners through a curriculum that is rich in knowledge, language, and experience. From Reception to Year 6, our curriculum is designed to ensure that every child becomes a fluent reader, a skilled communicator, and a lifelong learner.

Reading and Vocabulary: The Heart of Our Curriculum

Reading is the foundation of our curriculum. We believe that every child has the right to learn to read well and to love reading. Our approach is underpinned by three key pillars:

  • Early Reading and Phonics
In Reception and Key Stage 1, we deliver a rigorous, systematic phonics programme (Read Write Inc) to ensure that all children develop strong decoding skills. This early foundation enables children to access the wider curriculum with confidence and independence.
  • Reading for Enjoyment and Fluency
We foster a culture of reading for pleasure, where books are celebrated and reading is a joyful, shared experience. Children are immersed in high-quality texts across all subjects, and we provide regular opportunities for reading aloud, independent reading, and book talk. Fluency is developed through modelled reading, guided practice, and performance, helping children to read with confidence, expression, and understanding.
  • Explicit Vocabulary Instruction
Language unlocks learning. Supported by aspects of the CUSP curriculum, we explicitly teach vocabulary in a structured and sequenced way, ensuring that children acquire, revisit, and apply rich and ambitious language across all subjects. This approach supports comprehension, deepens understanding, and empowers children to express themselves with precision and confidence.

Our Enhanced Curriculum: Learning Beyond the Classroom

We believe that memorable experiences enrich learning and help children make meaningful connections with the world around them. Our enhanced curriculum is designed to broaden horizons, build character, and inspire ambition.

  • Forest School in EYFS and KS1
Our youngest learners benefit from regular Forest School sessions, where they develop resilience, creativity, and a deep connection with nature. These outdoor experiences support physical development, communication skills, and emotional well-being.
  • Educational Visits and Cultural Experiences
We provide a wide range of trips and visits to enhance classroom learning, including visits to the theatre, local landmarks, museums, and even universities. These experiences bring learning to life and raise aspirations for all pupils.
  • Sporting Opportunities and Team Participation
Children at Parc Eglos take part in a variety of sporting fixtures and tournaments, promoting teamwork, perseverance, and healthy lifestyles. We celebrate participation and achievement in sport as part of our commitment to developing well-rounded individuals.
  • 50 Things to Do Before Leaving Parc Eglos
Our bespoke “50 Things” initiative ensures that every child leaves our school with a rich bank of experiences—from flying a kite and building a den, to performing on stage and visiting a university. These carefully chosen experiences support personal development, build cultural capital, and create lasting memories.

At Parc Eglos, our curriculum is inclusive, ambitious, and values-driven. It is designed not only to secure academic success, but to develop confident, compassionate, and curious individuals who are ready to thrive in the wider world.
