Special Educational Needs and Disabilities at Parc Eglos

At Parc Eglos School, we are committed to providing an inclusive and nurturing environment where every child is valued. We believe that all children deserve the opportunity to achieve their full potential, and we work hard to ensure that every student, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), receives the support they need.

Along with our dedicated in-house team, we also work closely with Mrs Roma Claudius who is our Education Mental Health Practitioner and Mrs Clair Roberts, who is the Crofty Speech and Language Therapist.

We embrace diversity and are proud to be an inclusive school. Our SEND provision ensures that all children can access a broad, balanced, and challenging curriculum. We work in close partnership with parents, children, and external specialists to create a learning environment where every child can succeed.

What Are Special Educational Needs?

A child is identified as having Special Educational Needs if they require additional support beyond the universal provision provided for all students. This may be due to:

  • Communication and Interaction (e.g., speech and language difficulties, Autism Spectrum Disorder)
  • Cognition and Learning (e.g., dyslexia, moderate learning difficulties)
  • Social, Emotional, and Mental Health Needs (e.g., anxiety, ADHD)
  • Sensory and Physical Needs (e.g., visual or hearing impairments, physical disabilities)

Identifying and Assessing SEND

At Parc Eglos, early identification of SEND is a priority. We use a variety of methods to assess and monitor children’s progress:

  • Regular teacher assessments and observations
  • Standardised tests to identify gaps in learning
  • Input from parents and guardians
  • Referrals from health or external professionals

When a concern is raised, the class teacher and the SENCO work closely with parents to assess the child’s needs. We use the Assess, Plan, Do, Review model to guide our support for each child in the form of our ‘Star Plans’.

We follow a graduated approach to supporting children with SEND, which involves four key stages:

  1. Assess: We work together to gather information about the child’s needs.
  2. Plan: Based on the assessment, we create a personalised plan of support.
  3. Do: The plan is put into action through targeted interventions.
  4. Review: The progress is regularly reviewed with the child, parents, and staff, and adjustments are made if necessary.

If a child’s needs require additional support beyond what the school can provide, we may apply for an Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP).

SEND Support and Interventions

We provide a range of interventions and strategies to support children with SEND, which may include:

  • Quality First Teaching: Differentiated teaching within the classroom to ensure all children can access the curriculum.
  • Small Group Interventions: Focused group work to address specific areas such as literacy, numeracy, or social skills.
  • 1:1 Support: Individualised teaching or assistance for children with more significant needs.
  • Speech and Language Therapy: In-school support from trained specialists.
  • Social, Emotional, and Mental Health Support: Programs to support wellbeing, including nurture groups and counselling services.

The Role of the SENCO

Our SENCOs, Mr Powley and Mrs Martin, are responsible for coordinating the provision for children with SEND across the school. They work closely with teachers, parents, and external professionals to ensure that the needs of each child are met.

Working with Parents

We believe that parents play a key role in supporting their child’s education, and we value the strong partnerships we have with families. Parents are regularly involved in the review of their child’s progress, and we encourage open communication at every stage. If you have concerns about your child’s development or feel they may need additional support, please get in touch with your child’s class teacher or the SENCO.

External Agencies

We work with a range of external agencies to provide specialist support for our children, including:

  • Educational Psychologists
  • Speech and Language Therapists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)
