Learning through the curriculum

At Parc Eglos Nursery, our approach to learning is guided by the three Prime Areas of Learning—Communication and Language, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, and Physical Development—alongside the four Specific Areas: Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design. We observe each child’s play, noting their next developmental steps and planning responsively to their individual needs. Through thoughtful adult interaction and carefully curated resources, we extend their learning, ensuring their well-being is prioritised for high-quality learning to take place.

For children aged 0-2:

Focus on developing the 3 Prime Areas:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social, and Emotional Development

For children aged 3-4:

Building on the Prime Areas, children develop skills in the 4 Specific Areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Independence is actively encouraged by providing children with a variety of decision-making opportunities throughout their day, whether it’s choosing activities, selecting resources, or deciding when to move between indoor and outdoor spaces. We also support the development of essential self-care skills such as toileting, dressing, and putting on outdoor clothing. Staff offer gentle guidance, allowing children to practice and build confidence in these areas at their own pace, fostering a sense of responsibility and pride in their growing independence.

We place a strong emphasis on developing speaking and listening skills, incorporating daily games and activities that promote listening, speaking, and understanding. We utilize resources like BBC’s Tiny Happy People and, starting in the summer term, will introduce the Read Write Inc. (RWI) programme for Starfish. Our team prides itself on its expertise in communication and language development, working closely with Crofty’s Speech & Language team and being trained in interventions such as TalkBoost to further support each child’s progress.
