Art & Design
“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”
Pablo Picasso

Art and Design is taught through the AccessArt curriculum, which provides a rich, progressive journey through artistic skills, processes, and creativity. Our approach places strong emphasis on developing pupils’ ability to communicate and think critically about art by ensuring the direct teaching of vocabulary is woven into every lesson.
Children are introduced to, and explicitly taught, key artistic terms that enable them to discuss techniques, evaluate their own work, and appreciate the work of others with confidence and precision. By securing this shared language, pupils can articulate their creative ideas, make connections across artistic disciplines, and reflect more deeply on the creative process.
The curriculum encourages exploration, experimentation, and self-expression while providing structured opportunities to build skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and digital media. Alongside this, pupils learn about diverse artists, designers, and craftspeople from different cultures and time periods, broadening their understanding of the role of art in society.
